Why I Started The Considered List (And How I Choose What Makes the List)
I've always been the person people come to when they need a gift idea.
Whether it's a birthday, anniversary, retirement, baby shower, housewarming, or Christmas gift, I've somehow become the unofficial researcher in my family and among my friends.
And honestly, I love it.
Some people enjoy shopping. Some people enjoy decorating. Some people enjoy planning vacations.
I enjoy the search.
I love finding something thoughtful. Something useful. Something a person might never have discovered on their own.
I've never believed the best gifts start with a category. I think they start with a person.
I love the moment when a gift feels exactly right for the person receiving it.
Over the years, I started noticing something.
The gifts people appreciated most weren't necessarily the most expensive. They weren't always the trendiest or most impressive either.
For my daughter's bridal shower, one of the most appreciated gifts wasn't the most expensive one. It was a framed illustration created to look like her, right down to her hair and personal style. Because she's a huge Harry Potter fan, we were able to include details that reflected her favourite house and some of the things she loves most. During the shower, friends and family added handwritten messages around the illustration and signed their names.
Years from now, it won't be remembered because it was expensive. It will be remembered because it was personal. It's something she can display in her home, look at every day, and be reminded of a special moment and the people who shared it with her.
More often, they were the things that made everyday life a little better.
The blanket someone uses every evening.
The mug they reach for every morning.
The practical item they never knew they needed.
The small luxury they would never have bought for themselves.
Those gifts tend to stay around. They get used. They become part of someone's routine.
And to me, that's far more meaningful than something that creates a brief moment of excitement before ending up forgotten in a drawer.
That's one of the reasons I started The Considered List.
I wanted a place to share recommendations that felt intentional rather than endless.
A place focused on quality over quantity.
A place where every recommendation has a reason for being there.
Because if you've ever searched for gift ideas online, you know how overwhelming it can be.
Hundreds of products.
Hundreds of opinions.
Hundreds of lists.
Sometimes having more options doesn't make the decision easier.
It just makes it harder.
I've never been interested in recommending things simply because they're popular.
I'm much more interested in finding things that are useful, well-made, thoughtfully designed, or genuinely delightful to receive.
Whenever possible, I also love discovering unique makers, small businesses, and locally created products. There is something special about finding an item with a story behind it—something that feels a little more personal than what everyone else is buying.
For more than twenty years, I worked in the corporate world. While I enjoyed many aspects of my career, this was always something people knew me for.
The person who researched everything.
The person who found the restaurant.
The person who found the unique vacation.
The person who found the gift.
The person who somehow knew exactly what to buy for the person who already had everything.
Helping people find something they'll genuinely love has never felt like work to me.
It feels like one of those rare things that gives energy rather than takes it away.
The Considered List was created as a place to share that passion.
Not to encourage buying more things.
Not to fill homes with clutter.
But to help people give better.
To help people find things that will be used, appreciated, remembered, and enjoyed.
Because the best recommendations aren't always the most expensive.
They're the ones that make someone feel seen.
And those are the recommendations you'll always find here.
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by endless gift guides or struggled to find something meaningful, you're in the right place.
